FibroScan (Liver Elastography Test)

A FibroScan liver elastography test is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to measure liver stiffness and assess fat accumulation in the liver. This test plays a crucial role in detecting liver fibrosis and liver scarring, both of which are common consequences of chronic liver disease. By identifying early signs of stiff liver tissue or fat buildup, the scan can help evaluate the extent of diseased tissue and support timely intervention. Compared to invasive biopsies or more complex imaging tests like magnetic resonance elastography or magnetic resonance imaging, FibroScan offers a quick, comfortable, and efficient alternative.

What to Expect

Liver Elastography Preparation
You’ll be asked to fast for 2–3 hours before the test to help improve accuracy.
How is Liver Elastography Performed?
The liver elastography procedure takes about 10–15 minutes. You'll lie on your back with your right arm raised. A small probe is applied to the skin near your liver, using ultrasound elastography to send painless vibrations into the tissue. These pulses travel through the liver and reflect how stiff or flexible the tissue is. The device records the speed of wave travel to measure liver stiffness, with results expressed in kilopascals. Elevated values may indicate fibrosis or cirrhosis. The scan also uses ultrasound imaging to assess fat content with CAP scores. No sedation or needles are required.
After the Test
You can return to your daily routine immediately. Your liver elastography results will help your healthcare provider assess disease severity and your response to treatment over time.

Advantages and Limitations

FibroScan offers a rapid, non-invasive way to evaluate liver health and detect complications such as liver fibrosis, liver inflammation, and fat buildup that could lead to fatty liver disease. It allows clinicians to track scar tissue formation and determine whether chronic liver disease is progressing or stabilizing.

Unlike an invasive biopsy procedure, which samples a small portion of tissue, this scan assesses a broader area and identifies variations in blood flow, liver stiffness, and tissue quality. It’s ideal for repeated use, especially when monitoring patients at risk of liver failure or other serious health problems.

While FibroScan is highly useful, its accuracy may decrease in people with obesity or excess abdominal fluid—factors that can affect liver stiffness readings. In such cases, more advanced tests such as magnetic resonance elastography or CT and MRI scans (CT and MRI scan) may be considered for a more detailed view.
